Sad Poni
A1 Print.
Inspired by Drake's song Search and Rescue, Sad Poni is a vulnerable exploration of longing, heartbreak, and self-reflection. The title itself is a cry for escape, a desire to be "taken out of the club, taken out the trap." The artwork captures the emotional tension between yearning for connection and the fear of vulnerability, to put your heart on the table.
This piece was particularly difficult to make at the time: I’d built a strong connection with someone I really cared for. One night (while on the sauce) I heard her say to someone else… ‘I love him but he’s not my forever boy’.
I think a piece of my soul chipped off that night, which I guess upon reflection, can really only be attributed to some of my own actions… As a result this piece changed. It felt more angry which was not the intent from the outset. It feels darker in contrast to some of my other pieces and then Entei (my dog) walked across this painting while I was at work one day. It’s sort of funny when you think about the theme of being walked all over. Fitting.
The wild mustang symbolises freedom and resilience, its deep, untold stories, mirroring my own introspections and struggle to open up. Surrounding it are fragmented glimpses, intimate moments from past experiences. Serving as reminders of love’s complexities and shortcomings. I like to say, I’m an untamed spirit (like the mustang) but that sounds far better on a tinder profile… less stabby / throw off a balcony type.
