Oma Rapeti (Run Rabbit Run)
A1 Print.
This piece draws its name and inspiration from a childhood song, Oma Rapeti, where a rabbit flees an unseen hunter. In this work, the rabbit's journey becomes a metaphor for life’s challenges and temptations. Growing up, we encounter enticing vices and distractions. These elements symbolise the alluring traps that can lead us astray, much like Hansel and Gretel.
At its core, Oma Rapeti speaks to the quest for something deeper: eternal love and inner peace. Amid the chaos, yearning offers hope. For those who persevere, who find clarity amidst confusion, the rare treasure of eternal love and peace awaits. Yet, the question lingers: will we ever truly find it?
Our pursuit of such often begins in our reckless years. Mine did anyway.
We all remember the first time we smoked what was then positioned to us as “the ever terrifying gateway drug.” Relax, it’s onaturaaaaal. Besides, the appeal of doing something you’re told not to at that age only amplifies it ten fold.
One of my first times was with a mate named Greg who I met while working at Levi’s in Dressmart Onehunga. And as the story always goes back then, I got incredibly baked. Only, 20 minutes later, Greg decided it was time for him to go to bed, not tip-toeing around the fact that meant I had to go home. Fuck.
I remember sitting in my car trying to pull myself together: “it’s only an 8 minute drive home, Dallan. You’re sweet”. Approaching the first corner, the tree at the end of the road closed the distance much quicker than I was turning right. I missed the tree - just - however the curb wasn't as lucky. I gently kissed the hubcap off my wheel never to be seen again.
Feels like the reaper was present that day. Although I managed to, for lack of a better word, swerve him, SKRT!
