God Defend New Zealand

The accompanying quote is borrowed from one of New Zealand's most iconic films, Once Were Warriors. If you've never seen it, the quote may seem out of place but I'd encourage you to watch it. Decades after its release, its themes remain as relevant as ever.
Rather than dwelling on the film's darkness, I wanted to focus on what comes after. To me, this work is about breaking cycles, challenging stereotypes, and believing that people and countries are capable of evolving.
New Zealand is often celebrated for its natural beauty, but our greatest strength has always been our people. Like any family, we carry scars, differences, and uncomfortable truths. Progress doesn't come from pretending those things don't exist; it comes from acknowledging them, learning from them, and choosing to move forward together.
No one person changes a nation. It takes a tribe.
This piece is a reminder that the responsibility to build a better future belongs to all of us. We rise by holding one another accountable, lifting each other up, and recognising that our greatest achievements will always be shared ones.
